- The World in Focus Photography
Contest and Exhibition is the heart of the World in Focus
event.
The purpose of World in Focus is "To Raise Environmental
and Cultural Awareness Through Photography." The Photo Contest
and Exhibition gives photographers a voice in contributing to
that mission.
A total of 325 entrants, submitting more than 1,700 high-quality
images from the U.S. and Canada, were judged in eight different
categories for their originality, creativity, technical proficiency
and impact. The categories included Landscape, Wildlife, Plants,
Indigenous Cultures, Environmental Issues, Underwater, Urban
Wildlife and Creative/Computer Enhanced.
When the judging was over, 62 photographers were selected, with
a total of 91 images for the Exhibition, which will be displayed
at Rainier Square from June 1 through July 20, 2003. It is an
extremely impressive collection of photos with great diversity
of subject matter and shooting styles.
Another 53 photographers were selected from an additional 98
images as honorable mentions. They will be presented along with
the 91 print exhibit images in a special video presentation on
a repeating basis for the two days of the World in Focus
Seminar Series at the Hospitality Room (the Seattle Center's
Alki Room), June 7-8.
The judges for this year's event include:
- Cathryn Buchanan, a previous 15-year editor with National
Geographic, and executive producer with Peel Interactive
Media;
- Carl Gronquist, managing photography editor with Corbis;
- Robert Winters, art director of Alaska Airlines
Magazine, the in-flight magazine of Alaska Airlines.
- All three judges reside and
work in the Seattle area.
