Description: I recently moved to Seattle from Northern California, attracted by the variety of terrain and quality of light in the Puget Sound region. Twilight and dusk offer the most appealing illumination of all. On my first photo trip after moving, I was compelled to stop near Neah Bay at sunset by a tree-topped stone pillar that dominated a small, rocky beach. The heavy cloud cover provided a moody backdrop with a line of bright sky near the horizon, and did not obscure the distant outline of Vancouver Island. I was fortunate enough to capture a highly dramatic scene that had great depth.

My first career was in electronic engineering, working for Hewlett-Packard in Northern California for 15 years following college. While doing this, I discovered an artistic impulse, which found its first expression in acting. This led to a secondary career in professional theater, which continues in my new home, Seattle. It also led, after several years as a video producer for HP, to an enduring love of monochrome photography. I left the corporate world in 1991 to pursue both photography and acting professionally.

World in Focus is my first competition, and I am delighted beyond words to have one of my images chosen. This honor has persuaded me to dedicate myself to making and offering striking black & white landscape images. I will have a new website online this summer to display all of my photographs.
