Description: This image was created by returning to the same location many times during the fall. I wanted to create a dramatic image of Mt. Baker from an unusual perspective. My goal was to highlight the fall colors on an alpine ridge with fresh snow on the mountain. On the first few attempts the mountain never revealed itself through the fog. I kept hiking to this ridge in the hopes of a clear view. I had a few moments of partially clearing skies through the fog blowing over the ridge as the sun was setting. The drama of the clearing fog adds considerably to the image.

I am a natural landscape and outdoor recreation photographer. A Seattle native, I live in Bellingham, Washington with my wife Denise Snyder, a fiber artist. We enjoy the surroundings of the San Juan Islands, and the forests and mountains of the North Cascades.

With 25 years of work focused on Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, I create images of places that speak to my soul. My specialties are mountains, glaciers and alpine areas, as well as wildflowers and old growth forests. I also create images of people in landscapes for a sense of scale and adventure.
My photographic style is to hike into remote wild places and capture the light as it plays across the landscape. The large format 4x5 camera is my instrument of choice, though I also have an extensive collection of 35mm images. The large 4x5 inch original permits the greatest detail and gives me the ultimate perspective control from foreground to infinity. With my mural-sized reproductions of mountain landscapes, this large format is necessary for details you can almost walk into.

I am always on the lookout for scenes that speak of the magnificence and fragile state of nature. Photography encourages me to see details and textures in a new perspective, from miniature to grand. What one captures in a photograph is present for only a moment's time, the break of sunlight between mountain storms, a rainbow or alpenglow after sunset. Ultimately I hope that my images will allow others to experience the peace, exhilaration and wonder that I experience when I am outside in the wilds of nature. I also hope it gives the viewer another reason to be good stewards of our land.
