Description: The Giltoyees River valley is part of British Columbia's Great Bear Rainforest, which encompasses the largest contiguous tract of undeveloped (and unprotected) temperate rainforest in the world. Home to the Haisla people, thousand-year-old trees, numerous grizzlies, wolves and other wildlife, the Giltoyees is threatened by clear-cut logging that could forever destroy its ecological, biological and cultural significance. Representatives of the First Nations, environmental organizations and the provincial government have been negotiating for more than four years in an effort to create lasting protection for the area. At this time, the Giltoyees, like most of the Great Bear Rainforest, is spared from logging only by a temporary moratorium agreed to by the timber companies while negotiations continue.

In our world, nothing remains static everything that exists is in a constant state of change. While change that occurs over longer periods of time is seen as natural, we're now experiencing change that is vastly accelerated and transmuted from normal ecological processes. The rate and scale of human-caused environmental degradation on our planet is staggering, and with each passing day we lose more of our wild places, wildlife, vital cultures and reminders of our past.

My photographs are attempts to catch real moments in our real world, before we blink our eyes and what we've seen is gone. To help heal our world, we must be reminded of its wonders and mysteries. My mentor, Minor White once said, "Sometimes and somewhere in a life, a very special gift of an image is given." I am fortunate to have been in places that are still changing slowly and to have been given images that speak of the beauty and transience of life.
